Hi, I'm Maggie and I'm an ex-wine enthusiast. I never felt I had a problem with alcohol because "I was a sophisticated wine drinker." Only people who drink the hard stuff during the day have a problem right?
But my daily wine habit started causing me problems. I was waking up every night at 1am, had constant brain fog and felt like I was stuck on a hamster wheel of life.
I started hearing this inner voice questioning whether my relationship with alcohol was a normal one. Was it normal to be so territorial over my wine? Wasn't it normal to drink every night? I'd try set rules in place like only drinking on weekends, but couldn't seem to follow through. I always found an excuse to drink.
But the problem was, I didn't feel like I was aligned with who I wanted to be in this world and didn't love how I was showing up for my kids, my husband and more importantly, myself.
I'm so glad you're here!
The definition of Self Awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with your internal standards.
That inner voice that kept tapping me on the shoulder eventually got loud enough that I became sober curious. I started listening to the podcast Over the Influence and realized there were people out there just like me. Not only were they just like me but this UK based podcast made sobriety sound so bloody brilliant and fun! (Thank you Shaz & Ben!)
I signed up for a 100 day challenge. The goal wasn't to give up alcohol forever. The goal was just to do a 100 day challenge and get a telegram in the mail from Shaz the host of the podcast. But on Day 101 I felt so amazing that I decided to do another 100 days. PRO SOBRIETY TIP: When you say you're doing a challenge no one questions why you aren't drinking they actually cheer you on!
It was in that second round that I knew I wanted to go out and tell the world about my new superpower! It all started with The Sober Summit and has now grown into The Sober Life Collective. Our mission is to provide resources designed to inspire others to see their full potential by choosing to live alcohol free.
I'm here to support you any way I can!
For decades, I have been passionate about health and wellness. I love immersing myself in this field, reading books (including cookbooks), watching documentaries, and attending countless online summits. During my early days of sobriety, I found myself searching for a summit specifically focused on sobriety but couldn't find anything available.
Inspired, I approached a few podcast hosts to see if they wanted to collaborate. My plan was to handle the website and marketing behind the scenes while they became the face of it and conducted the interviews. After all, they were pros at this already! They loved the idea but politely declined, suggesting instead, "If you do it, we'd love to be speakers!"
Wait, me host a summit? No way! I hadn't even gone public about my alcohol-free journey. Plus, I had no following—no one even knew who I was!
But then that inner voice spoke up...
I had been hearing stories of people in sobriety doing things they never thought possible—running marathons, writing books, changing careers—all incredibly challenging feats. My inner voice said, "This could be the really hard thing you do on your alcohol-free journey."
So, I said yes to myself. I embraced the wildly unknown future, despite never having run an event like this before or interviewed anyone other than a daycare provider. I reached out to the authors, podcasters, coaches, and experts who had profoundly impacted my life with their stories and asked if they would take a chance on a first-time event from someone they had never heard of.
And guess what? They said yes! Annie Grace said yes. William Porter said yes. Andy Ramage said yes. And 21 other inspirational people in the sober community said yes.
The first Sober Summit event took place in April 2023 and over 5,000 people attended. My goal was to inspire just one person (who wasn't a family member) and I was overwhelmed by the messages I received from people all over the world telling me how much it helped them in their journey.
The power of sobriety is real. It is truly a life-changing choice. I hope you'll join us for the next Sober Summit and discover how amazing life can be without alcohol.
To truly help people, it was crucial for me to get the right training, especially when dealing with a highly addictive substance like alcohol.
I started by becoming a certified Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. This certification provided me with a solid foundation in coaching and a holistic approach to health and wellness. It's an excellent starting point for anyone interested in becoming a health coach.
To go deeper in to the evidence-based coaching techniques, I trained with Andy Ramage, often referred to as the Godfather of the alcohol-free movement. I completed his six-month Diploma of Positive Psychology course. This course is accredited by the International Coaching Federation, The Association for Coaching, and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council.
In this course, I learned the skills and tools to help clients understand the mental barriers that keep them stuck. Positive psychology offers numerous assessments, resources, tools, and feedback models that help clients become clearer about the changes they might need to make to achieve their goals. So much of what keeps us stuck is our mindset.
To complement my training with Andy, I became a certified Gray Area Drinking Coach through Jolene Park's Nourish Method, which incorporates the physiological aspects needed to reduce anxiety and cravings. In this course, I learned how to effectively work with my client’s depleted biochemistry and the importance of nourishing neurotransmitters to rewire, replenish, and repair the nervous system.
Combining psychology with physiology provides the best approach to help clients achieve lasting change and thrive in their alcohol-free journey.
